THE CLEAR Model: A Simple Framework for Breaking Down Barriers in Conflict
C — Check your internal state
L — Look for the real need underneath your reaction
E — Engage with curiosity
A — Acknowledge the shared humanity
R — Respond with clarity and boundaries————————————————
C — Check your internal state
Before we speak, email, or “correct” someone, we have to ask:
Internal Questions:
What exactly am I feeling right now?
Where is this reaction coming from? (exhaustion, insecurity, fear of loss, feeling disrespected, feeling unheard?)
Is this about the current situation or something older?
Is my body telling me I’m threatened, overwhelmed, or overextended?
Why this matters:
This step reduces reactivity and moves us out of “fight/flight” mode and into “thinking mode.”————————————————
L — Look for the real need underneath your reaction
Most conflict responses come from an unmet need, not the surface behavior.
Internal Questions:
What need of mine isn’t being met?
(clarity, stability, respect, structure, recognition, control, reassurance?)What am I hoping will change?
What part of me feels threatened or vulnerable?
Is this conflict pushing up against one of my values?
Why this matters:
When we identify the underlying need, we can address the right problem — not the symptom.————————————————
E — Engage with curiosity
Curiosity dissolves 80% of workplace conflict.
Internal Questions:
What might I not know about their perspective?
What story might they be telling themselves?
What pressures might they be under that I can’t see?
What would explain their behavior if I assume they are doing the best they can?
Why this matters:
Most conflict escalates because both people believe they already understand the other person’s intention.
They rarely do.————————————————
A — Acknowledge the shared humanity
This step is quiet but powerful.
Internal Questions:
Have I forgotten that this person has fears, needs, hopes, and limits just like me?
What effort might they already be making that I’m not seeing?
If I assume they’re not my enemy, how does that change the conversation?
Why this matters:
A moment of human acknowledgment can break through defensiveness faster than any script or technique.————————————————
R — Respond with clarity and boundaries
Once we understand ourselves and them better, we can speak with clarity, not emotional charge.
Internal Steps:
State the issue factually, without blame
Clarify the impact
Identify what you need going forward
Ask for their perspective
Set boundaries or expectations if needed
Why this matters:
The response becomes less about winning and more about alignment.Book a 30-minute call with me HERE to discuss your critical growth needs.
